The Personal Antivirus Threat
Personal Antivirus is the latest in a string of especially devious malware entities. These new ones pretend to be anti-malware programs, and get you to download them to keep your computer safe... ironically, infecting your computer! Personal Antivirus is a particularly bad one, so you should know how to get rid of it and do so quickly, or your entire computer could become as good as a bulky paperweight.
These rogue antispyware programs are designed to lure you to buy fake anti-virus software. The working method adopted by these rogues is very aggressively marketing based. They advertise again and again, flash messages on your screen that your system is infected. They provide the fake solution to remove this fake problem and it becomes very easy to fall prey to these rogues. The interesting and ironical fact is that if you are viewing these pop-ups flashing on your screen then your system is infected at the very first place itself and all this happens because of the Personal Antivirus program.
This rogue software will attack your computer with unwanted and unauthorized advertisements, flash ads, pop ups and will significantly decrease the operating speed of your system.
The remote server connected to this particular software may, at anytime, be recieving logs of what ever you are browsing, and even your keystrokes. In this way, hackers can gain access to secure sites with your personal information. Yes, this includes your email, paypal, and even bank and credit accounts. You run the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft.
What can be done about Personal Antivirus? While there are many quality, free antispyware programs available today, ie Spybot S&D,or Lavasoft Ad-ware Free Anniversary Edition, you will more than likely need to make a small investment toward a higher grade antispyware program. With the added benefit of frequently updated detection databases, a greater quality program is able to find and remove all the files and registry entries hidden in your computer.
Programs of higher quality may cost a bit of money, but have features that enable them to detect more bugs, and more recent spyware. You will also find yourself well protected in the future, as better anti-spyware programs will include features that can prevent you from ever being infected at all. Some examples would be PC Tools Spyware Doctor 6.0, and Sunbelt CounterSpy 3.1, which are priced anywhere between $45 and $20.
Such an investment will be beneficial to you, especially in the case of Personal Antivirus. This type of rogue spyware tends to be harder to get rid of because it is more difficult to detect and remove. It will literally hide obscure files that may be undiscernable in your program files. Even when you have uninstalled and removed the root files of this program, the code in these hidden files reinstalls the program. Trying to manually remove hidden files is nearly impossible because they are random and harder to identify as spyware. In the end it is much safer to spend a little and protect yourself in the future.
